Devine ‘Tireless’ for her Coworkers, Clients, Community
“I was pretty sure I was going to be a race horse jockey when I grew up,” Delap CPA Casey Devine said with a laugh. “But accounting is a fairly comparable profession, so I will probably stick with that!”
That’s Devine in a nutshell – she’s witty, has an infectious smile, and always likes to keep the mood light.
“Casey is fun to be around,” said fellow Delap CPA Sarah Padfield, an assurance principal. “It’s impossible not to smile when you are working with her.”
Path at Delap
Yes, it’s safe to say that Devine’s personality has shone brightly at Delap, ever since she joined the firm in November 2011.
After graduating with an accounting degree from George Fox University in Newberg, Devine (formerly Finney) spent one busy season on the tax side, before switching over to the assurance department.
So why did Devine stick with assurance?
“I enjoyed the variety on the audit side,” she said. “I liked meeting the clients and seeing their businesses first-hand. I loved the unpredictability of where I was going to be and who I was going to meet. I felt like the audit side pushed me outside of my comfort zone and challenged me on a daily basis.”
In addition to helping her clients succeed, Devine and her husband Preston are active in the community.
So much so that Devine received Delap’s annual James O. White Community Service Award in July.
Devine volunteers as a mentor for Faithful Friends, which is “basically like Big Brother, Big Sister but is Christian-based,” she said. Devine and her husband have been meeting with their 9-year-old mentee once a week for the last year-plus.
Devine also volunteers as an assistant racquetball coach at her alma mater, Southridge High School in Beaverton.
Not to mention that in the fall of 2015, Devine joined the board of directors for a nonprofit organization, Youth Progress, which is “dedicated to providing youth with the living skills, structure, and support needed to transition successfully into the community,” according to its website.
“I wanted to use the skills I have obtained over the past few years to try and benefit people outside of my immediate circle,” she said. “I think the organization does great work, and being involved with their mission has helped me step outside of my own circumstances and realize how much harder most other people have it.”
In line with her sense of humor, Devine admits that her family calls her “Queso,” and she and her husband are the proud owners of two “adorable” bunnies named Chester and Oreo.
Outside of work, Devine enjoys gardening, where she “attempts to grow” such fruit and vegetables as raspberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, artichokes, lettuce, and beans.
Also, Devine admits that she ran the Portland Marathon once – “and will never do that again,” she said with a smile.
Instead, you can generally find her playing soccer or volleyball with friends, or curled up on the couch with a good book.
Prior to high school, Devine had never been outside of the country, but now she enjoys traveling and has visited various countries throughout Europe and Central and South America.
Impressing Her Clients
Meanwhile, back to Delap.
“I like learning about the different companies we work with and seeing the various ways of operating a business,” Devine said. “I like getting jobs done quickly and well. It is always nice to impress a client.”
She certainly has done plenty of that. After all, Padfield calls her “tireless.”
“Casey doesn’t give up,” Padfield said. “She tackles issues head on.”
For more than 80 years, Delap has helped clients win, thanks to employees like Casey Devine.
